Audio Book Review: The City of Brass by SA Chakraborty

City of Brass (The Daevabad Trilogy book 1) by S.A. Chakrborty, narrated by Soneela Nankani
Fantasy/Romance
Summary: Nahri has never believed in magic. Certainly, she has power; on the streets of eighteenth-century Cairo, she’s a con woman of unsurpassed talent. But when Nahri accidentally summons an equally sly, darkly mysterious djinn warrior to her side during one of her cons, she’s forced to question all she believes.
533 Pages

My Rating: B+

This is not something I'm as strongly well-versed in as the European Fairy Tales I know so well, but I've always been fascinated by the ideas of djinn, so this one was a fascinating read. The characters are unique and interesting to follow, and the story is like the backside of what we hear about djinn. We're used to hearing about what the djinn do to or for their human masters, but what are their internal politics like? This book answers that question and shows that there are different cultures within the larger djinn community. The plots swirling around the characters keep you guessing to the end, and I can't wait to see where it goes in the next book.

Definitely a fun story. This one is for people who enjoy reading about middle eastern culture, and those who like the 1001 nights tales. Especially if you like complicated plots. This is also a great one for people looking for stories not set in a white, American or European setting. The characters here are varied in several ways, and will give you lots of insight into Middle Eastern culture.
