Black Lives History Timeline: 1999 - Amadou Diallo

1999: Amadou Diallo's Murder
Amadou Diallo, a 23-year-old immigrant from Guiana was outside his building, having just returned from an early breakfast on February 4th (I assure you I did not pick these based on month, though it's kind of horrifying that all three of these took place in February) when four plain clothes officers drove by and saw him. Edward McMellon, Sean Carroll, Kenneth Boss and Richard Murphy believed him to match a possible suspect, or possibly to be a drug lookout, so they approached him, guns drawn. They claim to have called warnings, but witnesses later stated there was no warning at all before they shot, firing 41 times between them and hitting Diallo 19 times. After an investigation, they were indicted for second-degree murder and reckless endangerment in March. A year later, the four officers were acquitted of all charges.
